Backup & Restore

Use the right archive for notes, media, flashcards, and game progression—and avoid treating local or account storage as a complete backup.

Guide updated: November 2, 2026

Where your data lives

Notes are stored locally in SQLite in the RelicNotes app-data directory. Media and downloaded AI models use separate managed folders.

  • Windows: %APPDATA%\com.relicnotes.app\notes\
  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/com.relicnotes.app/notes/

Avoid manually editing the database or media folders while RelicNotes is running. To inspect media or models, run App: Open Media Folder or App: Open Models Folder.

Export notes and media

  1. Open Settings → Data → Data Backup.
  2. Choose Export All Notes + Media (ZIP).
  3. Choose a destination and wait for the result showing exported folder, note, and media counts.
  4. Store the ZIP in a separate safe location, such as an encrypted external drive or a trusted backup service.

For a single note, you can instead run Note: Export to Markdown, Note: Copy as Markdown, or Note: Copy as Plain Text. Those options are not complete library backups.

Merge a notes-and-media archive

  1. Make a fresh backup of the current library first.
  2. Open Settings → Data and choose Merge Import from ZIP.
  3. Select an archive created with Export All Notes + Media and wait for the note list to refresh.
  4. Check folders, matching notes, and media after the import finishes.

Restore broader game data

  1. Create a current backup before restoring anything.
  2. Verify that the archive is the intended Backup Game Data ZIP from the correct device and date.
  3. Open Settings → Data → Restore Game Data from ZIP and select the archive.
  4. Follow any restart or reload instructions, then check notes, flashcards, media, and pet progression.

Move to a new computer

  • For notes only, export All Notes + Media on the old computer, copy the ZIP, then use Merge Import from ZIP on the new one.
  • For a broader transfer including areas such as flashcards and pet progression, create Backup Game Data on the old computer and restore it on the new one after backing up the new computer’s current data.
  • Sign in afterward if you use account synchronization. Signing in alone does not transfer ordinary notes or inventory items.
  • Keep the original archives until you have verified that the new installation opens correctly and contains the expected data.

Recover deleted notes from Trash

Open App: Open Trash or the Trash item in the left drawer, then choose Restore on the note. Trash displays a 30-day retention countdown.

After 30 days, the note is permanently deleted and can no longer be restored from Trash. Delete permanently and Empty Trash also bypass further Trash recovery. Use ZIP exports for longer-term retention.

Respond to database corruption

RelicNotes can detect corruption and offer restoration from its latest local backup while preserving the corrupted copy with a timestamp. Prefer that in-app recovery flow.

  • Do not delete notes.db merely because a backup is not immediately visible.
  • Keep a copy of the current files before attempting manual recovery.
  • Close RelicNotes before any manual file restore.
  • Contact Support if the in-app recovery option does not resolve the problem.

Keep archives secure

Backup archives can contain private notes, media, settings, and other sensitive local data. Store them with the same care as the original information, use encryption where appropriate, and do not send an archive to Support unless you have reviewed its contents and intentionally chosen to share it. Read the Privacy Policy for more about local and online data.
