Shortcuts & Troubleshooting
Learn the current keyboard commands and solve common problems without risking your local notes.
Guide updated: November 2, 2026
How to read the shortcuts
Mod means Ctrl on Windows and Cmd on macOS. For example, Mod+N means Ctrl+N on Windows and Cmd+N on macOS.
Open the searchable Keyboard Shortcuts panel with the help/? button or App: Open Keyboard Shortcut. The in-app panel is the authoritative reference if an older guide disagrees.

If a command palette surprises you
- Mod+Shift+P opens the editor/block palette when a note editor has focus; outside that context, it opens the app palette. Both include shared app-level commands.
- Double-Ctrl opens the special global command palette and brings RelicNotes to the front, including from a minimized or tray state.
- Esc closes the special palette and leaves the window visible. Left/Right Arrow closes it and restores the previous minimized/tray state.
- Double-Ctrl and a single press/release of Ctrl are different: the latter can execute a prepared Fire Mode run when a target is selected.
The backend says Offline
Continue using local notes and check your internet or backend connection. Online account, community, friends, and synchronization features recover when the backend health check succeeds.
Offline status alone is not a reason to restore a database, delete local files, or create another account. Cloud AI and model downloads also need internet, but configured local AI can continue when its provider and model are available.
Notes appear to be missing
- Search across the library. The ordinary empty-query sidebar initially loads only the latest 30 notes for performance.
- Check folder and search views, then open Trash and restore the note if it was deleted within its 30-day retention period.
- Do not delete notes.db or restore an old archive merely because the sidebar is not showing an older note.
- If you suspect database corruption, prefer the in-app recovery flow and keep a copy of current files before any manual restore. See Backup & Restore.
A local AI model fails to load
- Confirm that the model finished downloading and that the configured model folder is accessible.
- Check available RAM. Open Settings → AI Models to inspect loaded state, unload engines, and retry after correcting the folder or resource issue.
- Remember that Unload now frees RAM, not disk space, and the next operation may need to load the model again.
- For AI Chat, separately verify the local server or OpenRouter provider configuration. A model-management problem and a provider-connection problem are not always the same issue.
Reminders or desktop notifications do not appear
- Check that the reminder is enabled and that its time and recurrence are correct.
- Enable global checking in Settings → Reminders.
- Allow notifications for RelicNotes in your operating-system settings.
- Keep the app or background service running. Closing the window may leave RelicNotes in the tray; use App: Quit RelicNotes only when you intend to exit completely.
Updates and getting more help
Open Settings → About to check your version. Use Update Now for an available signed update, then Restart RelicNotes to apply it.
If you still need help, visit Support. Include your RelicNotes version, Windows or macOS version, what you expected, what happened, and the steps that reproduce the issue. Do not include passwords, API keys, full payment credentials, or private backup archives.
You can also return to the Getting Started guide or review Backup & Restore before making major data changes.
