Your first quest

Getting Started

Install RelicNotes, create a note, adopt your companion, review flashcards, and protect your local data.

Guide updated: November 2, 2026

Before you begin

RelicNotes is a desktop application for Windows and macOS. There is no mobile version. Core notes, existing flashcards, virtual-pet interactions, and Fire Mode can work offline.

  • Windows 10 or macOS 10.15 minimum; Windows 11 or macOS 12+ recommended.
  • 4 GB RAM minimum and 8 GB recommended.
  • 500 MB storage minimum and 1 GB recommended for the app. Downloaded AI models and your own media can require more.
  • No account is required for core local note-taking. Online account, community, synchronization, and cloud-AI features need internet.

Download and install

  1. Open the Download page and choose Windows .msi or macOS .dmg.
  2. Run the downloaded installer and follow your operating system’s installation prompts.
  3. Launch RelicNotes. If your system shows a security prompt, verify that the installer came from the official RelicNotes website before continuing.
  4. Open Settings → About to confirm the installed version and check for updates.

Create your first note

  1. Press Ctrl+N on Windows or Cmd+N on macOS. You can also click New Note.
  2. Type a title immediately—the default title is already selected. Press Enter in the title to move to the first content block.
  3. Write text, then add other blocks such as checkboxes, images, code, tables, or audio. In a rich-text block, Shift+Enter opens the block inserter.
  4. Keep editing without pressing Save. RelicNotes auto-saves after a short delay and when text editing loses focus.

Organize and find notes

  • Move notes into folders with the note context menu or drag and drop. Add searchable tags in the note’s tag area.
  • Ctrl/Cmd+Q focuses sidebar search; Ctrl/Cmd+P opens Quick Open for jumping to a note.
  • Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+S opens Advanced Search for body text, sorting, and semantic options.
  • Insert a Note block to reference another note. Its displayed title updates when the target is renamed.
  • The ordinary empty-query sidebar initially loads the latest 30 notes. Search to find older notes rather than assuming they were deleted.

Meet your study companion

  1. Open the pet panel and follow the adopt/create flow. Your companion receives a random species and a procedurally generated appearance.
  2. Continue taking notes and studying. Eligible activity contributes to RPG progression such as XP, gold, equipment, quests, and achievements.
  3. Use feed, play, and pet interactions to care for your companion and watch its attributes and progression develop.

The pet is optional gamification. You can keep using the basic note-editor workflow without turning every writing session into a battle.

Create and review flashcards

  1. Open Pet: Open Flashcards from a command palette or open Flashcards from the pet panel.
  2. Create a deck, then add cards manually with front and back content.
  3. Choose See Front See Back, See Front Type Back, multiple choice, or fill-in-the-bracket depending on how actively you want to recall the answer.
  4. Start a review and reveal, type, or choose each answer. RelicNotes uses spaced repetition to schedule future reviews and records session progress.

Make your first real backup

Open Settings → Data → Data Backup → Export All Notes + Media (ZIP) and choose a safe destination. The archive includes folder structure, notes, and saved media.

Read the full Backup & Restore guide before moving computers or restoring broader game data.

Updates and next steps

RelicNotes checks for updates shortly after startup by default. Open Settings → About, choose Update Now when an update is available, then choose Restart RelicNotes to apply the signed update. Startup checks can be disabled in Settings.
